Famous People
This series is a great introduction to the biography genre, and my kids love the fact that it focuses on these famous people when they were children. Not especially well-written, they nevertheless serve a worthy purpose: engaging kids in history.
This one examines various childhood events in the life of Elizabeth Blackwell, one of the first female doctors in the US. The events illustrate her character and the development of her interest in the practice of medicine. While loosely based on history (one imagines that the conversations, for instance, between Elizabeth and her aunt are likely the product of artistic license), they still serve the overarching goal of making history approachable for younger children.
